We Run for Palestine
I am running a half-marathon this fall to raise funds for United Palestinian Appeal’s Mahmoud Darwish Scholarship Fund. Your donation welcome!
My mother was 16 when she lost her home, and everything she owned, during the Palestinian Nakba. Only one thing kept her and her elderly parents out of the refugee camp: her education. With her matriculation certificate, the equivalent of a high school diploma, she was able to get a job with the Red Cross, providing medical care to refugee children. At 16, she became the breadwinner of the family.
For decades, education was the Palestinian’s ticket back to life. It enabled many of us to rebuild our lives, though in exile, and to thrive after the great losses of the Nakba. Education is the one thing no one can take away, though they may try.

When I was 16 (late 1980s), during the First Intifada, Israel ordered our schools closed for months at a time. I write in my book Fugitive Dreams about our struggles to study independently and organize secret classes so we could keep learning.
Today, Gaza is devastated. Even if a ceasefire takes place now, Gaza needs our help to stop the impending famine, to rescue those we can, to provide medical care, and to rebuild. Today, Gaza’s universities are all flattened, and its schools are frequently bombed. This damage to educational institutions threatens to irreparably hurt an entire generation of Gaza’s children.
That is why I am running a half-marathon this fall to raise money for United Palestinian Appeal’s Mahmoud Darwish Scholarship Fund.
You can help by making a donation through the link below. 100% of your donation will go to pay for Palestinian students to attend universities in Palestine and Jordan. The benefits of an education lasts for generations, so your contributions will continue helping Palestinian families long after the aid trucks leave.

Update
I have registered for a half-marathon (13.1 miles) to take place on September 8. After not having run beyond four miles for the last five years, the Iqraa running club helped me push my mileage up to eight. With two months of training left, I feel confident about the race.
With love,
