Thank you, Stephen. There are a great many Jewish voices, even within Israel, that are highly critical of Israeli policy. Some go as far as rejecting Zionism, a rising trend as the images from Gaza mount. Naomi Klein for example has recently called Zionism a “false idol” (I had already called it “the golden calf of history” in this poem, ‘A rose among gods of stone:’ https://medium.com/@ramsey-hanhan/a-rose-among-gods-of-stone-0f55b756b38b). Others like Miko Peled have been vocal for decades.
That said, my point is that none of these voices replace actual Palestinian voices. Ask, why do people pay attention when Naomi Klein says the thing Palestinians have been saying for decades? It’s not just in the West. Even Palestinians fall for that trap, and forward memes of Miko Peled saying stuff our fathers had already said fifty years ago. Why? Is it an ingrained colonial orientalism? A belief that the “white man” knows better?
