Two months into the ceasefire in Gaza, I finally gathered the strength to sort a tall piles of documents that have gathered since October 7, mostly drafts of poems, essays, or speeches. A smaller pile went back a year earlier to the publication of my book Fugitive Dreams. After working through them on Saturday night, I felt debilitated all day Sunday, unable to do anything.

It was agonizing because I had an important post in mind. Sunday was the anniversary of the murder of American activist Rachel Corrie, and I was burning to write about accountability. Rachel would have been in her forties by now. Perhaps she would have been a mother. In literally trampling over her life, the Israelis extinguished a whole lineage, a combined potential of many people who could have brought much needed good to the world. Rachel’s parents spent twenty years of their lives seeking accountability for her murder, and only ended up feeding the predatory Israeli court system. Had her murderers been brought to justice, perhaps we wouldn’t have had all this. Giving Israel pass after pass has only enabled and nurtured the fascism we see today … but I was too debilitated to write all that.
