Haifa and the bay from atop Mt. Carmel (Photos by the author, 1984).

“Haifa is a beautiful city. Built on a promontory, the city extends for several hundred meters up the slopes of Mt. Carmel. We ascended along narrow zigzagging streets lined with sidewalk cafes. The upper parts of the city provide stunning panoramas of Haifa’s white buildings against the deep blue Mediterranean. On a good day, one can see far up the coast, all the way to Lebanon.”

The Baha’i shrine and gardens from Mt. Carmel (Photos by the author, 1993 and 2004).

“I found Haifa had expanded. New construction and industries, on a grand scale, new hotels and parks on Mt. Carmel, and beautiful new gardens extending along the slopes, above and below the Baha’i shrine.”

“The Baha’i sect is famous for its cultivation of beautiful gardens surrounding its temples.” (Photos by the author, 2004).
