A heartfelt and comprehensive view of the campus protests and a powerful vision of a brighter future. Thank you for your steadfast support for Palestine and the student protests, Gail.
Your children deserve a normal childhood. I struggle, preoccupied as I am with what's happening in Gaza, in giving my daughter the attention she deserves. We must.
At the same time, the schools are amiss to ignore the genocide and go on with their regular curricula as if nothing is happening. Instead of debate and learning, they silence discussion with letters and threats. How do we expect our children to make sense of a world where we teach them the history of the Holocaust and drill 'Never Again!' into them, but then ignore it when one happens in full view?
Growing up in Palestine, our schools were more flexible. Many a time the teacher would drop the lesson of the day and talk about current events. Who cares about ancient poetry when the kids have questions about the soldiers patrolling their streets? American schools are more controlled by Federal money and standardized testing requirements and so many other measures. I wonder the ultimate worth of that cookie-cutter education - turning out people who cannot think for themselves and are thus easy to lead.
